With the proposal from Skateline to start a Pre-Speed Clinic for its members and Team SpeedVirus' mission to promote speed skating - a Pre-Speed Clinic was born.
From the month of August 2002 to October 2002, the 6-part Speed Clinic saw 13 members signed up. Most participants are Intermediate/Advance skaters who have been skating for more than 1 year.
Under the blistering summer sun on 31 August 2002, our 1st clinic kicked off with a bang.
The participants turn up eagerly every Saturday at Fort Road car park for the weekly 2-hour clinic under the killer sun. Each week, we see them improving their techniques, speed and endurance. With each passing week, they are more eager, more gungho and confidant.
During one clinic, Alexandra Bont of Bont International was there to lend personal support to the Clinic and gave some invaluable feedback. Thank you Alex for the support!
After 6 weeks, the big day (19 October 2002) has arrived for the "speedsters" to do a Half-Marathon race down East Coast Park. They huffed and puffed down the coast with all the Instructors hot at their wheels. After weeks of training and correction, the new Viruses are skating much faster, more powerful and with improved strokes and posture.
Colin Yau emerged 1st with timing under 50 mins and won for himself a set of performance wheels and many pats on his sweaty back! Most others managed to complete under 1 hour. Pretty impressive for starters :) Way to go Viruses !!!!
Thanks for the Speed Clinic (from the participants):
Tim Wah: "Thanks to all for conducting the speed clinic. I learnt a lot from the sessions and best of all, made new friends from the skaters community."
Tian Teck: "Yes... Thank you Thank you. I learned so much in that 6 weeks. I am skating faster more confident now."
Collin Yau: "Many Thanks indeed to all the coaches. For the past 6 weeks, I always look forward to the Saturday training session. The training, the drinks, the company... You guys are the most encouraging and helpful group of skaters I have met - learning has never been so fun. Once again - Thanks!"
Edmund: "This is a very different experience."
Bernard: "Thank you 'Si-Fu'."
