June 03, 2007 - Runway Cycling 2007 By Virus JCskater.
It was a bright and sunny morning as all the Viruses, minus those who were participating in the Incheon World Inline Cup, gathered at the carpark outside Paya Lebar Airbase, in anticipation of the annual Runway Cycling event. This was in contrast to the rainy weather that was experienced in the previous two years. In fact, in 2005, the participants were soaked through just as the event was flagged off. However, this year, all we had to do was enjoy the sun, as well as the Vitamin D that was created in our bodies. Clearing the security checks, we moved on to sign up for our Endurance Challenge, picking up our tags that would certify us as "Endurance Challengers". At the starting line, we took our time to take photographs all around. In fact, it was a case of "hey, snap at this!", "this will look good for the website" and "come, let's pose together." Before long, the event was flagged off by the Guest of Honour, Professor S Jayakumar, who we hear is also an avid skater. Maybe we will get security coverage in future when he takes part in our speedskating races in future… Hmmm…. Along the way, some of us took the time to soak in the sights and sounds, enjoy the smoothness of the main runways or even to meet up with old cycling and skating friends. We even heard that many people in the scene had been training hard for this event, although it was non-competitive and nothing was at stake here. After over an hour of skating, collecting of rubber bands to signify our completed laps, as well as dropped mounting bolts and subsequent one legged bike pulling we reached the finish line, enjoying this event through and through. Our final, lasting moment of pride came when we saw Virus 003's (Uncle Lim) picture printed on all the 30km Skating Endurance Challenge certificates. Thanks to God for the wonderful weather and safe skate, as well as to the Singapore Air Force and SAFRA for organizing this wonderful annual event. Till next year, skate fast and hard, but don't forget your helmet.
