April 25/30, 2003 Written by Ang Tian Teck.
It was in the mid afternoon when the sky turned dark. The clouds were thick and low hovering just above our heads. Suddenly, it pours. It started raining all over Singapore. But it's a Friday! How could it rain on a Friday? Our phones started ringing. SMS were pilling up on our phones. "It's raining heavily in Orchard Road." , read one SMS. "It's raining in Clementi.", read another. "It's wet in the East side.", "Not good from where I am too.", and the list goes on. Viruses never give up when it comes to night skating. We are die-hard night skaters. There was only one answer to all these questions - "just meet at Padang at 7.30pm as planned.", was the final message to all. At 7.15pm Padang was still dry. It rained all over Singapore but Padang was still dry. There was a light wind. Looking north, the clouds were dark there. Looking west, it seems dark too. There was only one thing on our minds - let's gear up and go! So we put on our skates, waited for the rest to turn up and off we went. We decided to move north to our favorite "Kopi Tiam" for dinner and of course, my favorite Ice Jelly Longan. The roads were partially wet and we skated with caution. Aiyah! Still I slipped and fell.
Hmmm! Where is this slope that we are talking about? Join us for the fun and we'll show you. We continued, passing by Robertson Quay, Clarke Quay, Boat Quay, and the all quays that we can think of. Chinatown here we come. Wow! Another slope? Yes, and we go again weee! It was an exciting night. Before we knew it, it was midnight. Time to say goodbye. Viruses couldn't get enough. Let's go night skating again on the following Wednesday. And again Viruses hopes are high. It was Wednesday about 3pm. Aiyah! Rain again? "Don't worry, let's just meet." About 7.30pm the skies were all cleared. Parts of the roads were still wet. But that was ok. We moved on. This time we managed to zoom along Orchard Road towards Wheelock Place and beyond. Zipping through the not so crowded walks, crossing traffic lights, jumping over curbs, and conquering little slopes here and there.
Waving to crowds as they see us zoom passed, Viruses went in and out of tunnels and underpasses. Watch out! Wet, wet grounds at the corners. Lucky the first Virus made it. Ha ha! Before she could warn the rest, another virus took the corner at high speed. Wah! This one made it too. He uses the "A-Frame Power Slide" - what's that? Bang! The next one fell. Ouch!... Phew! That was fun! Then come to our next favorite adventure. Ahhh! The dark and scary stretch, slightly up hill and then down on wet roads that ended at a traffic light. On wet roads, Viruses were pushing and pushing really hard. Traction was minimum on our wheels. We reached the peak of the hill. Guess what? Down hill we zoom again. Weeee! "T-brake everyone, we need to make a right turn.", shouted one Virus. It was a WOW! Ride. We made our way back to the city, exploring unfamiliar roads and terrains. Stopping here and there, watching out for traffic and obstacles, jumping on and off roads where foot paths ends. Back to the city where lights were bright. Feeling thirsty, we stopped at McDonalds for a drink and some street dancing. Yah! Not kidding, street dancing. After a short rest, off we went again. Where next? Of course to our favorite slope again. And Viruses went up and down and to the Quays all over again. Heading back to our cars, Baby Virus remarked, "I want my Teh Chino.". It's late. "But, I want my Teh Chino." Ok, ok. So off we went to "Lau Pa Sat" for Teh Chino and some satay. Suddenly, it started drizzling. Then the drizzle got heavier...and heavier. Oops! Got to go. Viruses rushed off. By then most of the roads were really wet. No traction, no traction. Cannot move leh! Wow! Another exciting night. Good night! Join us for our next exciting night skating event. |
