The 15km Road Race

26 October 2003: TSV Time Trial - The 15km Road Race
Written by Justin Chew. Photos by Roy and Tian Teck.

Off went my hand phone alarm, on the early Sunday morning. Argh... I still did not have enough sleep. With my eyelids still heavy, I dragged myself out of bed and into the washroom, staring at the mirror I asked myself, "How to skate like this...sure die one, some more 15km." Soon after I left the house and met up with Virus CK. While on the way to our time trial venue he filled me in on the track details, as I haven't skated there before.

Upon reaching the venue, everyone one else has arrived. Virus Bear and Virus SpyDirector were waiting while Virus Lady Speedster brought the rest on a morning tour. After the mini tour, we geared up. Virus Lady Speedster started briefing Corrine, Rookie Virus who was there to help us with the counting and time taking.

"Ok, when we pass you press this then you press like that, understand?" "After you time you must do like that, understand?" "Ya, hmm, ok, ok"

Each in our little corners, we were all stretching and warming up when we heard someone fell. Smack! Well, guess who? It was Virus KP. He then came back and showed us the bruises on his palm, Virus Lady Speedster kept saying "Please lah, next time don't use hand brake. Hand brake only for cars not for skaters. Very bad one you know." Ha ha...

Finally, all instructions were given, Viruses were ready and the helpers were at their positions. At the starting point, everyone was in position. "Ready. On your mark. Get set. GO!!" All started to chiong and taking up their "positions."

Virus CK was first to go, followed by the rest who were side by side, butt to helmet, at times looking left and right. Then suddenly from behind... like our motto - "swift, silent, deadly", came Virus SpyDirector over taking everyone. "Go Spy Go!!" And soon he was behind Virus CK, ahead of us.

I was thinking, "Wah! Piangz! Virus SpyDirector so fast har..." Soon after, Virus Speedster and Virus Evocative took off and went after Virus SpyDirector. Inches by inches they disappeared from our sight.

The route that we have chosen for this 15 km road race is quite interesting. It has corners that we can execute our crossover steps. It has traffic junction that we got to look out for traffic. And wow! We even waved to the bus driver.

As we were approaching a junction, we looked left, look right and looking at our friendly roadside marshall, Roy, waving at us to go ahead, "All clear, go go." We continued pushing on and on and on and on...

We were keeping the pace, occasionally changing lead, trying to out do one another. When we passed the first half lap, I took the lead... whoosh whoosh... shoik ah. But then as we were reaching the end of the second lap, I felt a pain on my right side. "Alamak, stitches."

Slowly as the main group skated on while I tried to keep pace and thought, "Aiyah... pain pain lah!" Suddenly there was a flash! "Argh! Who was that taking photo!!?" When I turn around, I saw Roy laughing and holding on to a digital camera. Very funny!

The time trial ended around 10 plus. As usual, Viruses gathered to cool down and relax after an exhilarating event. We reviewed our timings and discussed about our performance.

By then our stomachs were growling. Well what can I say, its makan time!! The rest you can say is history.
