29 June 2003: Time Trial: End of 1st League 2003 Written by Terence Tang.
It was real early in the morning, but you could already see Viruses fluttering around preparing the track for our Time Trial. This Time Trial marks the final round of the 1st league for 2003.
To ensure that the track is clean, we deployed a couple of our very own "Harry Potter" characters with their "NIMBUS 2000" to clean up the place. It was like a Halloween party; here you can see Virus Jenn distributing party hats (they're cones actually). You can also see Virus TT cleaning up his breakfast from the floor (just kidding; he was just cleaning a wet patch to make sure the track is safe). The track was then marked and thoroughly inspected to ensure accuracy and safety.
This was then followed by our usual warm up and stretching exercises. After a few rounds of warming up around the track, we were all set for our first exciting event: the 300m Dash.
This is my favourite event. Here you get to see individual Viruses exhibit different starting styles at the starting line. Normally some might say that this event separates the men from the boys, but our own Baby Virus proves them wrong! Look at him fly! Chop chilli chop chilli chop, chop, chop all the way to the finish line. Like most of the rest, I finished my 300m with an improved timing from the last Time Trial. Great! Though its funny how you go through your trial runs with a good visualisation on how and when you're going to take the corners, but on the actual run, your instinct seems to take over and you don't remember a damn thing until you cross the finish line? Hmmm, it must be the adrenalin.
This next event was the exciting one: 5km & 10km race. You could see the Viruses all fired up with excitement at the starting line. The clock started and away they went! Here you get to see all the hard work being paid off as Viruses displayed their crosses at the bent. It was awesome. There were a lot of cheering and we even attracted a number of spectators too. Round and round that never seemed to end, excitement built as Viruses skated side-by-side and overtook one another (as drafting is a no-no in a Time Trial). It was very intense!
Despite the occasional killer head wind and unusual weather throughout the day, we completed our Time Trial successfully, most with good and improved timings. Congratulations to all the Viruses for completing this event with perseverance and hard work. All the training finally paid off Yeah!
I would like to personally thank all Viruses for their participation in this event, and also to the organizing committee for all the detailed planning and efforts. Not forgetting our official timer who was not able to skate due to a recovering injury, yet kept good time and made sure that all our timings were in order. Don't fret and get well soon :) cos our next Time Trial league comes with a series of new events. This is so exciting! Adrenalin junkie :) |
