June 29, 2008 - TSV Time Trial
By Virus Yang

It is a Sunday morning with a good weather. I woke up unusually early because I was excited to come back to the big TSV family and restart my training and time trial after 6 months of student exchange program in Sweden. It was regretful that I had left my beloved skates in Singapore. I missed inline-skating and more importantly my teammates.

When I arrived at the track, every Virus was either stretching or gearing up for our time trial. I can even feel their adrenalin in the air. Coach Jenn was busy checking and marking the start/finish lines for the team. She is always there serving the team and giving us precious guidance and personal help.

The first event was a 200 meters individual time trial. Viruses, one by one, got ready at the starting line to beat their own best timing. The first corner was a very sharp turn. You could hear the sound from friction between urethane wheels and the floor when skaters attempt to cross it at high speed. Everyone executes this short distant time trial well as smiles on Viruses' face revealed their contentment.

In the following race of 1500 meters, Viruses max out their speed and fought out for better positions in their different groupings. Baby Virus, Sean, had improved so much in his speed which shocked me. "Go, go, go faster…." All other Viruses shouted from the side of the track to cheer up the racing Viruses.

Finally, came the team relay. Each team of skaters sat together and planned their relay sequence while refueling with our team drink. It was a friendly and relaxed relay. The team lead by one flying Virus was formally given the name "TDC" (team double cock-up) as they missed the relay twice…. Laughter filled the track after the relay. They couldn't stop laughing at their mistakes themselves because it was real funny watching them over shooting, missing the mark….

After my six months of absence, every Virus seems to be getting faster and fitter. I have to train hard to get back my old form and train even harder to slash my own timing. It is great to be back to the fun and focused TSV family.
